Information
Brain Injury is the #1 Killer and Disabler of Children and Young Adults.
It Only Takes an Instant.
Here are several possible causes of acquired brain injury:
Motor Vehicle Accidents • Falls • Violence • Assaults with Firearms • Child Abuse • Shaken Baby • Sports and Recreational Accidents • Toxic Exposure • Near Drownings • Cardiac Arrest • Seizure Disorders • Metabolic Disorders • Lightening Strikes • Strokes
Helpful suggestions in relating to an individual with a brain injury:
1. Speak of familiar names, places, interests and experiences the individual has had in the past.
2. Talk about what is happening at home, your day at work, etcetera.
3. Use familiar photos of family, friends and pets.
4. Give the individual things to hold or touch that are different textures (flannels, silk or ice for example).
5. Take the individual outside whenever possible.
6. Have a few friends or family visit regularly. Avoid large groups at one time.
7. Play the radio for a while; other times, use the television.
8. To help the individual, provide a calendar and clock. We suggest using one without a sweep second hand.
Avoid Over-Stimulation:
The brain injured individual thinks slowly. Measured stimulation is needed. Too much can become frustrating and cause distress. Maintaining a calm environment is important. Have the individual concentrate on one action or event at a time. For example: hold a conversation, then watch a television show or listen to the radio.
